It’s time for back-to-school and we ask the question, “Why do kids have all the fun”? Ahhh, as we reflect on the innocence from our playground youth, we long for the easy life of being a kid in school, again. Here are six ways to act like a grade school kid this month:
1. Skip the corporate briefcase! Dust off the backpack from the basement and proudly sling it over your shoulder. If you’re lucky you’ll find a stick of gum and a dried out Sharpie. Have nothing to put in the sack? Make friends by adding a few bags of Southern Recipe Cracklins.
March on rind lovers, it’s time to bust your bracket with some foolproof (with emphasis on fool) tips. Let’s have some fun and forget all about the stress of picking the final four or hoping your team gets out of the first round.
Forget about picking from the gut or using science to pick the winners in each bracket and use our tips to see how well you do this year.
Round One: My mascot is meaner than your mascot
Pick your teams by which mascot would win in a fight to the finish. No, we mean the real animal-type mascot, not the freshman stumbling around in a paper mache head. Here at Southern Recipe, we think the University of Arkansas has one tough mascot (Go Hogs).
Round Two: No brainer
This round we’re going to make it easy on you. Pick the team that has the most wins during the regular season. If both have the same number of wins, pick the team that has the higher seed in the tournament.
Round Three: Vacation spot
Find the city where the college resides then pick the location you would like to visit on vacation. Lafayette Indiana vs. Miami Florida may or may not be a tough decision for you, but we guarantee you’ll know where each college town is located.
Round Four: Spin the color wheel
Pick your teams based on the team colors that you wouldn’t be caught wearing at son or daughter’s wedding. No counting for style, you just may pick some winners when the conservative side takes over your bracket.
Final Four: With a nickname like that …
Pick your teams based on the best sounding player nicknames. Scout? Not so good. Cracklin? Much better (well, we do like the rind names).
Championship Game: I like you best
For the final game, we want you to pick the most likable coach. Ok, putting differences aside, there’s got to be something you like about one of these guys. Think of it this way, which one would you most like to sit down and have some Southern Recipe Hot & Spicy Pork Rinds and a cold beer with? There, that wasn’t so bad.
Watching the Olympics and getting a hankering to join in on the competition? We’ve put together a few games … but with a warm state twist. Who needs the snow when you’ve got good ‘ol southern ingenuity?
This one is a little tricky, please proceed with caution and with your safety in mind. Go down to your auto shop and borrow their mechanic’s creeper (this is the wheeled flat dolly that allows mechanics to do work underneath your vehicle). Take it to the highest hill and push off. Ride the two-man luge with only your best friend.
This is an easy one. Pull out a few round citronella Patio Torches (round is best), grab a broom, and you’re ready to go. For added excitement light the touches!
The Biathlon event is where you shoot at targets throughout a cross-country skiing course. This event is a little trickier because you’ll need to strap on 2 x 4’s to your work boots and maneuver through a gravel road while shooting at road signs. Come to think of it that may just be another Saturday night in the south.
Even if your team didn’t make it to the Super Game, you’ll want to get ready for the biggest “homegate” of the season. Here are a few tips to keep the action going for every football fan:
1. Be aware that a few attending your party may be less than thrilled “fans”. Consider setting up an alternate room for their watching pleasure or set up a gaming area. There’s nothing worse than a 2 point game and a bored pacing spouse.
2. Food keeps everyone happy. Put together a spread that’s easy to replenish. Make a balanced selection of hot and cold choices. Make it easy for your guest to pick up on the run and eat with their fingers. Try our Hot and Spicy Pork Rind Chicken Wings, warm BLT Dip and Walking Pork Rind Tacos. Plus, you’ll have an easier time cleaning up.
3. Celebrate with your own touchdown dance. Think you got the moves? Show ‘em, and you could win $2,500! It’s fun … enter for your chance to win cash and pork rind prizes.
4. Game out of hand? If the score gets out of hand, don’t give into changing the channel. Remember, some of the most entertaining and creative TV all year is the +$3 million commercials. Never, ever talk while the commercials are playing. That’s a sure fire way to get designated to the kid’s TV.

We’re all about celebrations. Run out of gas as you coast into the gas station, celebrate. Snag the last bag of Southern Recipe pork rinds – really celebrate. NFL allowing touchdown celebrations – celebrate and celebrate again.
Which leads us to our annual Pork Rind Appreciation Day celebration. This year we’re honoring the original Touchdown Dancer, Billy “White Shoes” Johnson with his very own game, Gridiron Groovin’. It’s easy to enter. Visit PorkRinds.com, select your favorite touchdown dance moves and you’re automatically entered to win $2,500 and pork rind prizes. That’s it. Plus, each day you play up to the Big Game, you’ll be helping the rind-worthy charity, Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund.
Think you got the skills to dance like a pro in the end zone? Well, it doesn’t skills, just ability to celebrate. And we know you got that.

Go take a hike! Wait, we didn’t mean it like that. We’re talking about the Triple Crown. And no, we aren’t referring to certain adult beverages. The Triple Crown we’re talking about is a hiker’s dream!
Go West, Young (and Old) Man.
The Pacific Crest Trail is 2,659 miles of some of the most beautiful country you’ve ever seen! If you cover it all, you’ll see 25 national forests and seven national parks. Let’s explore!
A Peach of a Walk.
Stretching from Georgia to Maine, you can’t go wrong with the 2,200 mile long Appalachian National Scenic Trail. Be a “yo-yo” and hike the trail from one end to the other and then back again.
You May Split, But You Won’t Divide.
The Continental Divide Trail is 3,100 miles of postcard scenes. Stretching from Canada to Mexico, you can say, “Eh!” on one end and “Hola!” on the other. Make sure to stop at the Crazy Cook Monument with your bag of Hot & Spicy Pork Rinds, of course. You gotta share with fellow rind loving travelers.
Are you ready to go? Of course you are! First step: Plan your journey. Second step: Pack a high protein snack … or at least eat a high protein snack – aka pork rinds – brfore you hit the trail!
