Make Your Memorial Day Memorable

memorial dayFor more than 150 years, Americans have gathered in late spring to honor the sacrifice of those who have given their lives in service to our country. What began with dozens of informal commemorations has grown to become one of the nation’s most solemn and hallowed holidays.

Here are 4 things to do on Memorial Day to pay tribute to America’s heroes and celebrate the start of summer:

  1. Proud Parade

There just might not be a better place to spend the weekend than experiencing the country’s largest Memorial Day parade in Washington, DC. Arrive early with a bag of pork rinds to get a seat.

  1. Host a barbecue

After the parade, invite your family and friends over for the season’s first cookout. There’s nothing more exciting than firing up the grill (or the smell of lighter fluid and burning charcoal).

  1. Pay tribute

Pay tribute to those who have lost their lives fighting for our country by visiting a local veterans’ cemetery by placing flags and flowers to place on the graves.

  1. Thank a veteran

Organize your neighborhood kids to write thank you cards to veterans across the country — or better yet, send a care package to active troops (don’t forget the pork rinds).

At Southern Recipe, we believe Memorial Day should become something more than just the first cookout of the summer or watching the Indy 500. And although we love celebrating an extra day off, we are proud to honor all who have sacrificed so much for our country.
